LAGPA 2024 Conference: Shaping The Future Of Democracy And Governance In Latin America

The LAGPA 2024 Conference, themed "New Perspectives and Challenges of Democracy and Governance in Latin America," will be held in Mexico City from October 22-24, 2024. This major event will convene scholars, public officials, and experts to explore the region's most pressing issues in democracy, governance, and public administration.

The conference will open with a keynote session featuring prominent speakers, including Luis Miguel Martínez Anzures, President of INAP (Mexico) and host of the event, Guillermo Murillo Vargas, Rector of the University of Valle (Colombia), Conrado Ramos Larraburu, Secretary-General of CLAD (Uruguay), and Ruben Dario Echeverri Romero, President of LAGPA (Colombia), along with representatives from the International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS).

On the first day, Main Conferences will spotlight critical challenges to democracy and governance in Latin America, with Luis Miguel Martínez Anzures (INAP-Mexico) and Edgar Varela Barrios, former Rector of the University of Valle (Colombia), sharing insights on regional leadership. The session will be moderated by Conrado Ramos Larraburu (CLAD).

The Debate Session will feature prominent experts such as María del Carmen Pardo (INAP, Mexico), Luis Solari de la Fuente (former Prime Minister of Peru), and Edgar Jiménez Cabrera (International Center for Strategic Studies, Bolivia), facilitating in-depth discussions on democracy, public administration, and governance.

Panels:

1. Public Management and Technology: Artificial Intelligence and Digitalization  

   Moderated by Ariel Ramirez Orrego (Universidad de Chile), this panel (Gestión Pública y Tecnología. Inteligencia Artificial y Digitalización) will explore how AI and digitalization are transforming public administration. Experts, including Eber Betanzos Torres (INAP, Mexico) and Marcelo Ramírez Valenzuela (Universidad de Chile), will discuss how digital tools enhance efficiency and transparency.

2. Latin America and the SDGs: Sustainable Development and Environmental Conservation  

   Led by Claudia Souza Passador (Sociedade Brasileira de Administração Pública), this panel (América Latina y los ODS. Desarrollo Sostenible y Conservación Ambiental) will address the UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability. Speakers include Humberto Muñoz Grandé (Universidad Anáhuac, Mexico) and Tatiana Dias Silva (Ministry of Racial Equality, Brazil).

3. Security and Justice Policies: An Insecure Continent  

   Chaired by Leonardo Castellón Rodríguez (Universidad de Costa Rica), this session (Las Políticas de Seguridad y Justicia. América Latina, un Continente Inseguro) will tackle the region’s struggles with violence and organized crime. Panelists like Evelyn Villarreal Fernández (CONARE, Costa Rica) and Javier Oliva Posada (INAP, Mexico) will share strategies for creating safer societies.

Key reporters will include Rafael Martínez Puón (INAP, Mexico), Freddy Mariñez Navarro (El Colegio de Jalisco, Mexico), Adrián Velázquez Vázquez (University of La Verne, USA), Maira Prieto Padilla (Colombia), and Bairon Otálvaro Marín (Universidad del Valle, Colombia).

All sessions will be held in Spanish, with no interpretation available. Participation is free, but attendees are responsible for their transportation and accommodation. Due to limited capacity, early registration is strongly recommended, and confirmation from organizers is required.
